The Dark Knight review

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 23 August 2008 10:19 (A review of The Dark Knight)

What can you say about this film that hasn't already been said a gajillion times. It's dark, moody, and tests every characters' morals. There weren't any performances in here that I was disappointed in and that's often quite rare for any movie. Ledger's performance as the Joker, though, was truly creepy; finally, a villain I can take seriously.

Lost Boys: The Tribe review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 20 August 2008 06:42 (A review of Lost Boys: The Tribe)

Ooh... This was... not so much with the good. The "Lost Boys" legacy could really have done without the movie. The acting was just awful and while the first movie had cheesy but repeatable lines, this one was all just awkward and cringe-worthy. It also wasn't a sequel of any kind, but a poor attempt at updating the original. Just... don't waste your time; watch the first movie a second time instead.

The Fury

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 19 August 2008 03:55 (A review of The Vampire Diaries: The Fury and Dark Reunion (The Vampire Diaries))

The third book in the series offers several great twists and a great ending.

I've always really liked novels that make you think twice about a character and where bad guys become good guys or vice versa. That's a great switch up on Damon here, though I feel like there was much more alluded to him that wasn't really explained. There's a lot more going on under the surface that I was hoping we'd get to see, but maybe will be addressed in the next one.

The other thing I have noticed in these novels is the sex... or, you know, lack thereof. It's a big thing these days and even teen novels can't escape the mentions, insinuations, or youthful tension regarding the subject. But in The Vampire Diaries it doesn't come up even once. It sort of got me wondering if that was a sign of the decades, where in the early nineties that was a no-no for youth reading, whereas nowadays it's quite acceptable and often expected. Stefan and Elena never even think about it, let alone discuss the subject. It actually made for quite refreshing reading. Because the subject was never broached at all, there weren't any moral issues regarding "should they or shouldn't they" and the characters didn't spent tons of pages agonizing over it.

With the way The Fury ended, it really makes you wonder where the fourth will pick up. You get so used to the cliffhangers, but at the end of this one, it all seems to be tied up in a nice little bow. Makes you wonder if this was not originally meant to be a trilogy.

The Lost Boys review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 18 August 2008 07:58 (A review of The Lost Boys)

Definitely one of the classic vamp movies. It's still, to this day, one of my favourites and I can watch it over and over without complaint.

There's so much cheese and camp that you wanna laugh, but you just can't hate it.

Never Back Down review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 16 August 2008 09:02 (A review of Never Back Down)

Dayum... this shit is hot. 2 hours of sweaty men working out, flexing their abs, and comparing penis sizes... er, I mean fighting abilities. It's like a wee slice of heaven. The plot is seriously cliché and it's got all the usual sport/underdog roles (new guy who wants popular guys girl, coach who fills in for dad, girl who's tired of being popular and smooching the bad guy), but the fights are great and there are some interesting camera angles. I'm not sure I'd recommend it if you don't like watching people get the crap beat out of them, though!

Scream 2 review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 16 August 2008 06:28 (A review of Scream 2)

The best part about the first Scream movie was the tie-ins with horror movie clichés, so it's nice to see that followed up in the sequel. Outside of that, though, it's the pretty standard fare of horror movies that came out in the 90s during the big trend. A lot of thriller elements and plenty of fake blood.

The Struggle

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 16 August 2008 02:18 (A review of The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The Struggle (Vampire Diaries))

The Struggle

There's major trouble in Fell's Church and it starts with a capital D!

The second novel in the Vampire Diaries series starts at the exact point that the first novel ends... and finishes us off with another cliffhanger, so have Volume 2 ready! At least we don't feel we've missed anything, though, and reading the stories back to back just makes it feel like one long novel.

In this second story we really start to get to the meat of it all and the action definitely picks up. I was left a little puzzled, though, as to why Elena just didn't tell people about Damon. Maybe she couldn't have revealed all the secrets, but at least she could have warned people about him. It seems to me that would have made things easier on her to a certain extent.

Aside from that, there's a little more revealed about the universe's vampire lore, and that includes the inability to cross over moving water. I've never particularly understood this part of the myth and I imagine it must have made it very difficult for the vampires to come over from Europe! But I guess that's just a little detail. Also, we find out that the stronger the vamps become, the more they are susceptible to the things that hurt them. This will probably prove useful to Elena in the future.

I also liked the balance of danger from Damon and from humans. It makes for a great connection between evil beings, and just plain mean-spirited people. I am hoping, though, that by the end of it all, we really get to find out why Caroline has such a beef against Elena. As it is, it feels like it just sprouted out of nowhere.

The ending leaves you with a really big question and it looks like things are really starting to shake up.

The Mutant Chronicles review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 16 August 2008 12:19 (A review of The Mutant Chronicles)

For futuristic, sci-fi zombie-ish flick, I'd have to say this one wasn't too bad. The plot and concept behind it lend themselves very easily to becoming far too cheesy. While the movie straddles that line (too many scenes where you find yourself saying "That's so fake!"), there's actually a level of entertainment present. Lots of gore and violence, but at least the acting is decent.

Global Heresy review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 15 August 2008 07:16 (A review of Global Heresy)

For a straight-to-dvd movie, this one's surprisingly good. It's got great heart and a great soundtrack. I was surprised at how many times I found myself laughing out loud or bopping my head along. The gems, though, really come from Peter O'Toole and Joan Plowright; the eldest in the cast, but by far the funniest and coolest.

Camp Rock review

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago on 15 August 2008 07:01 (A review of Camp Rock)

I wish I had kids, then I'd have an excuse for watching movies like this. Either way, it's Disney, right?! So it's melodramatic, has a moral, and features a boy band. Great for tweens, but of no value to anyone else.
