The Love Guru review

Posted : 1 month, 4 weeks ago on 13 August 2008 08:40 (A review of The Love Guru)

The funniest part of this movie? The idea that the Maple Leafs would even make it to the finals, let alone win. So the movie had it's moments, but truly it's just another Austin Powers or Wayne's World lookalike. I imagine if you're big fans of those kinds of movies then this one will play just as well. There's a lot of ridiculous potty humour and play on words. Aside from that, Justin Timberlake as the Quebecois is actually funny and rings true on so many levels... but for most people outside of the province (or this country), the jokes will fall flat.

Disturbia review

Not bad at all! I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this teen thriller. It's typically predictable and it has all the cliché teen elements, but at the very least it's fun to watch. It wasn't at all campy and the acting held it together quite well.

Spider-Man 3 review

Posted : 1 month, 4 weeks ago on 13 August 2008 04:15 (A review of Spider-Man 3)

What the crap was this?! You know, people told me it would be bad, but I honestly didn't think it could be this hideous! It absolutely suffered from Batman-Sequel-itis; the first movie was good and dramatic - the sequels were vermin feeding off the popularity of the first movie while simultaneously turning the franchise into a complete mockery of itself. The whole thing was way too long, with way too many evil villains, and unnecessary plotlines. I think someone forgot to send this one to the editing room to cut out some scenes.

The Bucket List review

Posted : 2 months, 1 week ago on 4 August 2008 02:50 (A review of The Bucket List)

Though the concept of the movie is an interesting one and will probably get you to create your own life list, that's about as far as my own interest was held. I didn't particular find this any more inspiring than any other movie about death and feeling the need to leave your mark on the world/the ones you love. Occasionally I found the movie sort of lacked momentum. It seemed to pause too often to relate a story or anecdote that was supposed to be moving.

Atonement review

Posted : 3 months, 1 week ago on 6 July 2008 03:32 (A review of Atonement)

Though I enjoyed small individual moments in the movie and the overall execution... I was left feeling like there was something missing. I think the beginning went too quickly, and I feel I didn't get the chance to develop an attachment to the characters, to see the connection grow between them. Because of that, moments that should have been heartbreaking felt rather cold and distant. I really enjoyed McAvoy, though, as his parts set during the war were rather moving... but Knightley appeared sickly and aloof. The scenery was phenomenal and the plot an intense one, so I'm rather disappointed that I didn't feel as if I could immerse myself in it.

Basil review

Awkward and often too slow. The plot is interesting but lacks execution; you actually can't even like any of the characters. The end is maybe the only redeeming factor, as that's just about the only point where any of the actors seem to be comfortable in their roles.

Definitely, Maybe review

Just beautiful! :) I wish there were a lot more romantic comedies like this. I loved that you actually like all the women that Reynolds' character sees over time. His chemistry with Abigail Breslin, who plays his daughter, was also quite endearing to watch.

Revolver review

Posted : 3 months, 1 week ago on 5 July 2008 08:15 (A review of Revolver)

I am generally a really a really big fan of Guy Ritchie movies. He blends a great amount of action, with comedy, and great plot twists/mix-ups. For this one, I'm not sure I really "got it." I feel like somewhere along the line I missed something key which is rather frustrating. I find that having to break the film down and understand the concepts and took a little away from the enjoyment. I will say that Statham and Liotta put in fantastic performances and the scenes where they wrestle with their egos is mind-bending.

Fool's Gold review

Entertaining, and typical McConaughey. The movie is definitely recommended for those who enjoy the treasure hunting scenarios, or who were fans of "Sahara"... same movie, different location.

The Lake House review

Posted : 3 months, 1 week ago on 1 July 2008 03:48 (A review of The Lake House)

Although utterly implausible, there's something really soft and likable about the movie. I didn't particularly care for the lack of chemistry between Bullock and Reeves... but as they spend so little time actually together on-screen, it's really easy to overlook. It will definitely tug at the heart strings for any romantic.
