Enchanted review

Posted : 6 months, 1 week ago on 31 March 2008 08:40 (A review of Enchanted)

I was pretty sure I was going to dislike this movie before it even started. It's not particularly my thing, so I was pleasantly surprised when it started off rather cute and enjoyable. I loved the little transitions between animation becoming "real" as well as the crossover of fairytale aspects. James Marsden was great as the prince and so much the typical prince we see in animations. And then as the movie progressed, I found myself feeling just as I had expected I would right in the beginning. It just lagged afterwards and I found myself bored. I couldn't have cared less about Patrick Dempsey's character and then princess's overacting (though appropriate) just became tired. Perhaps it's the cynic in me, but I just couldn't get into it all about halfway through.

The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold review

Posted : 6 months, 2 weeks ago on 27 March 2008 08:46 (A review of The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold)

Holy crap, this was disappointing... and I'm someone who loves cheesy teen movies. But really, with all the references to the first movie and all the plot biting... they couldn't even get Moira Kelly and D.B.Sweeney to come back. There was absolutely no chemistry between the two young actors, and the skating scenes were cut so fast or chopped awkwardly that they might as well have been cut altogether. Just disappointing and will only make you long for the original.

The Last of the High Kings review

Posted : 6 months, 2 weeks ago on 26 March 2008 08:41 (A review of The Last of the High Kings)

Apparently I'm never going to learn to stop judging a movie by the cover! For the record, both Gabriel Byrne and Christina Ricci are barely in this movie so that was a disappointment. I also found it incredibly odd that an Irish movie had two very prominent American actors. Were all the Irish out sick that day? The movie itself is occasionally slow and the plot seems rather lackluster. After you're done watching, you can't help but wonder what the point of it all was.

Highway review

Posted : 6 months, 2 weeks ago on 25 March 2008 08:40 (A review of Highway)

Maybe I was in a really generous mood when I was watching this, but I actually kind of liked it. Sure it can come off as loopy and like it's trying too hard... but there's something about the whole "misspent youth" thing. It's an odd coming of age story and it you kinda get to like the goofy kids.

The Mist review

Posted : 6 months, 2 weeks ago on 25 March 2008 08:35 (A review of The Mist)

Decent movie. It's definitely enough to keep going until the end, wanting to know if anyone gets out alive... but if you know Stephen King at all, you can see that ending coming a mile away. I can say with all honesty that i never, ever want to be stuck in a room with a bible thumper for more than five minutes. I became increasingly annoyed that no one shut that woman up!

Less Than Zero review

Posted : 6 months, 2 weeks ago on 24 March 2008 08:36 (A review of Less Than Zero)

Sure... maybe it comes out cliché to say I liked the book better, but I really did. I feel as if making Clay so clean-cut and straight-edge that the movie really seemed to miss a large part of what the story was about. They also really fluffed over the gay/bi parts and oddly enough the soundtrack in the book was much catchier and representative of the 80s top 40. I do have to say that Robert Downey Jr. put in a stellar performance.

Across the Universe review

Not bad... and this from someone who isn't actually a Beatles fan (gasp, shock, I know). It's really just a teen musical, but might prove more interesting to those who've lived through this era. For others, it might just feel like a really long music video.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang review

Posted : 6 months, 3 weeks ago on 21 March 2008 08:45 (A review of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang)

Wickedly funny movie! Definitely for fans of black comedies and throwbacks to the old film noir movies. All the characters are so oddly neurotic that you spend the whole movie going "What the hell?!" but you get swept up in all the little coincidences. A great comedy of errors.

Fame review

Posted : 6 months, 3 weeks ago on 20 March 2008 07:57 (A review of Fame)

In an era that's best known for it's sappy and often fairy tale teen movies, it's no surprise that Fame stands out. It definitely more gritty and admittedly depressing. The only irony in a movie about acting and being famous, that there were so few of them who went on to do much of anything afterwards. A little surprising considering the quality in this film.

The Incredibles review

Posted : 6 months, 3 weeks ago on 20 March 2008 07:59 (A review of The Incredibles)

Not generally a fan of animated movies so it's no surprise that this one didn't exactly change that preference. It's cute and has some humorous moments... but I was rather disappointed with the lack of imagination. There were far too many scenes ripped from X-Men or Star Wars that I'm surprised this can even be considered an original movie.
